Swatched
Docuseries on the art of knit and crochet
Swatch: a small piece of knitting or crochet worked to determine gauge (number of knit or crochet stitches in an inch using a specific size needle or hook). Swatches are equal parts romantic and pragmatic. They inform the math required to create a perfectly-sized pattern, but are also the seed of an idea, a conveyance of artistry and creation, and a touchable history of a creative action.
Swatched is a docu-series that challenges every stereotype that comes to mind when you hear the words, “knit and crochet.” In each episode, we’ll dive into the lives of people at the top of their craft - artists, designers, and producers who have more than earned their place in the upper echelons of the $200 billion knit and crochet industry. The video featured on this page is a proof-of-concept featuring Angela Tong, a fiber arts designer from New Jersey.
The series will focus on the people who develop patterns, inspire trends, and inform fashion. The people who are looking to upend an age-old industry with modern ideas, and those who are looking to return it to its ancient roots. Taking inspiration from Netflix’s Chef’s Table, each episode will delve into the forces that drive these obsessive artists in their quest for creativity and perfection. We may learn what led an artist to pick up a pair of needles in the first place, or see a designer riding a burst of inspiration. We may follow a yarn producer on a quest to the Irish countryside to source a particular kind of wool, or tag along as an artist sells their latest creations.
Examining knitting and crocheting through both a personal and a creative lens, Swatched will explore the intersection of identity and artistic process. The series will transcend the traditional how-to-content that is aimed at a knitting audience, showcasing the origin stories of the patterns and materials knitters and crocheters crave, while giving viewers a deeper understanding of the craft.
Swatched is a co-production between Cereal Made (USA) and Suite One Productions (Canada) with Meghan Jones of Little Nutmeg Productions on board as consulting producer.
